A MINIATURE CONCENTRATION TRANSDUCER

 

 

IN-LINE INFRARED SENSORS

The MicroSpec is a new type of Mid Infra Red (MIR) transducer in which the absorption is measured directly in stream, and the concentration converted into a 4-20mA output. Organic functional groups have characteristic absorption bands in the MIR spectral region. Absorption bands associated with individual components in a mixture are frequently isolated from other bands and can be used to quantify the individual components by the strength of their absorption. Calibration data in the MIR is generic and is readily transferable instrument to instrument. The difficulties of MIR spectroscopy include; The available energy decreases with wavelength, transmitting materials are expensive and less chemically resistant. Hence, optical fibers for the MIR region are very expensive and difficult to manipulate. Most material are strongly absorbing in the MIR and therefore cells with extremely short effective path lengths (10 to 100mm) must be used. Due to the MicroSpec unique design, these difficulties are overcome. For liquids and emulsions, ATR technique solves the problem of high absorbencies in the MIR. Since fiber optics at this wavelength range are expansive the sensor is design for direct in stream measurements transmitting only a 4-20mA signal proportional to the concentration readings.

 

The MicroSpec contains an IR absorption sensor that consists of a source of infrared radiation, single or dual pyroelectric detector with a filter window for each detector element that isolates a specific IR wavelength, a thermistor to measure temperature and an optical element that creates infrared absorption by means of attenuated total reflection (ATR). The disassembled MicroSpec is shown above. An integral electronic package converts a DC voltage input into a pulsed signal to operate the source and amplifies and digitizes the detector output for transmission of a 4-20mA output.
