TIDAS MSP 200 in combination with a Carl Zeiss Axiotech microscope

 

Petrographic analysis have been recognised internationally as important in the context of the genesis,  metamorphism and usage of coal. The measurements of single coal provide information regarding the rank, the maceral  and microlithotype compositions and the distribution of minerals. Mainly the measurement of vitrinite reflection in a coal blend is a useful tool to get the information about some important chemical and technological properties but also the comparison of the Liptinite Fusinite and Inertite shares  has an important part in the classification of the different blend types.


The international Committee  of Coal Petrography (ICCP) has made some recommendations concerning the nomenclature and the analytical methods. In ISO/DIN Norm 7404 the microscope preparation is described as well as the measuring procedure and the handling of the data in comparison with reflection standards. Other standards like the Thermal Alteration Index ( TAI) or the Spore Colour Index ( SPI) can be used for more detailed analysis in addition.

 

The J&M photometer TIDAS MSP 200 is working according the DIN/ISO standard in the data acquisition procedure as well as in the analysis mode. Final histograms display the results in quantitative columns and relative shares.

Microscope Measuring techniques (depending from the used basic stand ):

Transmission brightfield, transmission darkfield, polarisation, epi- reflection, epi-darkfield, epi-polarisation, fluorescence.

 

 

Measuring Illumination: stabilised halogen lamp from the microscope manufacturer with motorised shutter and filter changer. According DIN/ISO 7404/5 an Interferencefilter IF 546nm and attenuation filters should be used.


Measuring principle: Photomultiplier spot measurement. On manual selected areas of interest the reflection light is detected and compared with reflection standards. Depending from the instrument`s configuration the size of the measuring field can de defined by fixed or variable diaphragms. A backward illumination enables the user to optimise the instruments adjustment. The electronic control offers a  dynamic range of 106 and takes the parasitic light automatically into consideration as well as the dark current.

 

 

Measuring functions:

 

  • Calibration - and adjustment routines to check the instruments parameter
  • Continuous display of measuring values to have an online observation about the signal development
  • Possibility for catching single values by mouseclick or external trigger to have statistic evaluations
  • Simultaneous multi channel detection with 10 different columns to archive a percentage distribution in multi component detection.
  • Minimum/Maximum display to calculate a moving angle during polarisation.

 

 

Measuring results:

Intensity in transmission and reflection as well as extinction with 16 BIT .

 

 

Evaluation: Printing the results is possible in tables and histograms. In addition to this the transfer of data into Microsoft Excel or via ASKII enables the user to create individual charts and displays. To optimise the experiments reliability up to 10 different measurements can be detected. The vitrinite reflection is done according to DIN/ISO 7404/5. Additional information can be obtained from simultaneous fluorescence observations which basic setup can be triggered also by the MSP software concept.
